Governor O’Malley’s Budget Proposal to Shift Pension Costs

January 2012

You’ve doubtless seen the press coverage of the release of Governor O’Malley’s FY13 budget. The governor’s proposal to shift a portion of teacher pension costs to local jurisdictions received a fair amount of ink today, and likely will continue to in the coming weeks.

 In response to the proposed shift, MSEA shared the following statement from President Clara Floyd with the press:

 MSEA has long opposed, and remains deeply uneasy about, shifting teacher pension costs because of the detrimental impact such a shift would have on students, programs, and local school funding.

 Without a comprehensive fix to maintenance of effort, a shift would be a disaster for our schools. Meeting Thornton funding and proposing strong investments in school construction are important steps. But educators, students, and parents will remain deeply concerned about how we protect the quality schools that we’ve built together until the governor and General Assembly fix the $2.6 billion of local school funding now in jeopardy due to a broken MOE law.

TABCO/ESPBC Annual Bus Trip to Annapolis

January 2012

The TABCO/ESPBC Government Relations Committee is inviting all members to meet with our Baltimore County Delegates and Senators in Annapolis. We'll depart Monday, February 27, 2012. We will provide transportation to and from Annapolis for our members. The bus(es) will be leaving promptly from Cromwell Bridge Park & Ride at 4:30 p.m. and the bus(es) will leave Security Boulevard Park & Ride at 5:00 p.m. Please be present 15 minutes before departure. There is no cost to members and a box dinner will be provided on the bus. Return bus(es) will pick up participants at 8:30 p.m.
